Student Loans Company, Darlington
In this multi-award-winning project for Student Loans Company, Darlington we responded to our client’s brief to ‘change perceptions of the organisation’; an aspirational new facility which would represent a new approach to their customer service, accommodating over 600 new and existing staff, and to assist in attracting and retaining staff among a competitive and youthful market place while retaining the heritage and historical elements of the area.
This project is a key part of the regeneration of Lingfield Point, a landmark site which was once the world headquarters of the Patons & Baldwins yarn empire. We were lucky that we had the ‘Memphis’ building with its great history and character as a starting point, with a great natural light quality and high ceilings.
Graven developed Student Loans Company brand including communications, wayfinding and the design of interior environments. The central circulation zone referred to as the ‘Street’ comprises the reception and welcome area, meeting and training rooms, learning and coaching zones, meetings booths, complete with cafe and dining areas. The mezzanine space above this created an additional staff breakout and dining space. The building is overtly industrial and is completely open plan.
We introduced innovative materials to the space along with colour and texture not usually adopted within a corporate environment – this is not a typical office environment.
